and rode in the back of a pickup truck. tore the tickets off pillows, slept with the dog, ate cookie dough and cake batter, went trick or treating till it got well past dark with no adults.  My mama taught me how to drive and it didn't cost us 250 dollars to have one of those govt driver trainer scammers.  All we had to do was pass the driving and written test and go to court to listen to the judge.

Did all that, except not with a dog. Had a 15-pound cat who slept on my bed a lot, though. He had the whole house and lots of open-door bedrooms to choose; somehow he liked my feet the best.

Best part of all, he never parked his rear on my face. Not even to demand breakfast.

But, yeah. Little kids would be out WAY past 11 on Halloween. Later when I became a juvie delinquent, I'd get my delinquent friends together, and we'd pass the little kids, and drop bricks in their bags as they walked by the other way. Hear their bags rip, and their wailing.

Rode in the back of pickup trucks, sure. In fact our scout troop had an old telephone-company truck...ostensibly to haul our gear; it only had seats for three people. But we'd loaded 20 boys in it, more than once.

And rode on the Assistant Scoutmaster's Corvair, from the campsite to the bathhouse. He was about 22, and probably with the Boy Scouts to keep himself out of trouble. Which didn't always seem to work. He was a good guy, but playing a grownup really stretched his abilities.

Driver Ed was free at the high school. Just another course, but you only got one credit, not three like real courses, for taking it.

Most of us had enough wheel time by then we could have taught the course ourselves.
